ACTING

AUDITIONING for  Shrek Jr. at Martin Middle

What Will I Have to Do?
  • Each student will prepare, memorize and deliver a 1 minute monologue

What Will The Director Be Looking For?
  • Professionalism
    • Are you being respectful?
    • Is your attire appropriate for an audition?
  • Voice
    • Does your voice fill the room (projecting)?
    • Are you clearly articulating your words?
  • Characterization
    • Are you making good choices to represent your character?
    • Are you staying "in character"?
  • Energy
    • Are you showing enthusiasm for the audition?

How Do I Get Prepared?
  • There are several monologue books on the internet or at your local bookstore.  You can use a well known play or musical scene if you would like.  You can also type in "Monologues for kids" in Google.  This site is also a great choice for monologues.  MONOLOGUES

Audition Day
  • Do not wear a costume
  • Nervousness is normal.  Remember you are in the show. Auditioning is a process for all performing arts even in the workplace but it's called an interview instead.  If you are going to be a performer then you need to understand the process of  auditioning.  You will have all the time you need.
  • Have your script for Shrek Jr. ready, for a cold reading

SINGING

What will I have to do?

  • For the singing audition.  You will need to familiarize yourself with the 2 songs:
  • Boys: Travel Song
  • Girls: I know It's Today
  • Pitch Matching Exercises
    • Sing random pitches from the piano
  • Range Exercises
    • Sing penta-scale (Do through Sol) in various keys
  • Communication Exercises
    • Sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in various strange ways -- just seeing how well you take direction.

How Do I Get Prepared?
  • Memorize your music
  • Don't just sing -- perform the song as if you were on stage in front of an audience
  • Use appropriate facial expressions, body motion, gestures to communicate the music
  • Let your voice fill the space -- project!
  • Sing as often as you can in front of people who will give you honest feedback -- your parents love you but they may not always be honest about how you sound. Sing for friends and family who will give you honest, constructive feedback.
  • Record yourself singing and watch the recording. Pay attention to your face, your vocal volume and how well you use your entire body to communicate the music. Take note of what you need to improve. Improve it, record it and watch again. Repeat this process often.

DANCING

For this year, dancing auditions will be held the first day without campers having to prepare.  The play this year is very challenging as there are more lines of dialogue than music, so we are keeping the choreography challenging but easier for campers to learn.
